Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in armed forces or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to defend and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The clip seemed to provoke a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified announcement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they declared. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our United States with great patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the security of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme social media posts and withdraw his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this country and made an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the former president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to organize a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
