Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
