Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
