Cameron Norrie secured the most important success of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph marks Norrie's first ever victory over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to enjoy my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest win of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the most confident player in the world right now."

Norrie, positioned 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event victories, which was the top run of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to success at the start as he eased through the initial stanza.
