Ollie Pope Strengthens Claim to England's Number Three Spot with Impressive 90 Against Lions

It is hard to gauge how much of England's preparatory match will be remotely meaningful when their Ashes contest starts not far at Perth Stadium on Friday – a brief gap in geography or duration but worlds away in importance and mood – but if it managed only boosting Pope's assurance, that by itself has rendered the effort worthwhile.

England's No 3 – this fact is certainly absolutely clear – followed his first-innings century by notching another 90 in the follow-up innings, and the truly notable was not merely the quantity of scored runs but the style in which they were scored. At times the player appeared dominant, striking a twelve boundaries and a couple of maximums, connecting with the ball sweetly but with fierce intent.

It was only a practice match versus a England Lions squad that deployed fully 11 pitchers across a game played in amid a handful of people in a public park, but it was nonetheless very impressive. To note, England, needing of 202 after the Lions declared their follow-on innings on 251 for six, won by five wickets after Jamie Smith sped the team over the winning target with a series of boundaries.

Joe Root clocked up a further 31 runs but was not entirely convincing during England's preparatory.

Crawley and Duckett, the two other big first-innings' achievers, both failed in the second innings, while Root made several more points – 31 on this occasion – but was not enormously more assured, prior to being puzzled and duly dismissed by Jacks. Brook met an identical outcome shortly after.

Shoaib Bashir – who finished the fixture having delivered 12 overs for each side – will have found part of the strokes he bowled to quite aggressive. His opening six deliveries against the Lions conceded 56, with Ben McKinney taking advantage to deliveries that if not completely wayward was certainly not very threatening.

After the sixth spell of that period, the English side's three other bowlers had conceded almost precisely the identical amount of runs – 57 – from 15, though the bowler grew a somewhat less giving as time passed, conceding 27 from his remaining six. He secured one dismissal, making a clever, diving grab, leaning to his right, to conclude Jacob Bethell's batting stint for 70, off 80 balls.

Jacob Bethell, making up for scoring merely a small score in the initial innings, was a member of a trio of half-centurions in the Lions' top order. McKinney's returns from opening batsman were more consistent than those of their No 3: he notched 66 in their first batting effort and improved by two in their follow-up, taking 61 balls to reach his half-century, with five fours and two six-hit shots, each against Bashir's deliveries. Bethell made 68 before a mis-hit to Stokes at cover position, who held a bending catch at low down.

Jordan Cox displayed comparable steadiness, and built on his initial innings' 53 with another 57, at just over a run a ball. He played several exceptionally beautiful shots on the way, such as a straight drive and a pull shot from back-to-back Carse balls to achieve his half century.

After missing the initial day of this match with a stomach issue and contributed just the most minor of efforts to the follow-up, Brydon Carse delivered excellently when finally given the opportunity, with McKinney and Cox part of his three wickets.
