The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
