The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
