The Three Lions to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the relatively straightforward entry for a championship staged throughout the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an Three Lions game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, should they win Group B, their round of 16 match would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Competition Kickoff and Protest
The tournament was inaugurated at an event in central London on the previous evening. Senior figures from Uefa and the host FAs were confronted as they arrived the location by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will involve Wales if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Venues and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
