Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
